Chapter Five

About twenty minutes later, we hit my grandmother’s town, and Wulf turned one way while I turned another. I had to go to the store and find myself a new pair of underwear, and Wulf was going…wherever Wulf had been headed before he’d stopped to help me.

I was sad to see him go while at the same time I was lecturing myself about having sex on the side of the road with someone I’d just met. I’d like to think I was adventurous, but even that was a little extreme for me.

I smiled.

But I knew it was something I’d remember for the rest of my life. When I was my grandmother’s age, I wanted to have good memories of fun things I’d done when I was young.

“Scarlet?”

“Huh?” I said into the phone.

“Are you still there? Did you hit another dead zone?”

“No. I’m here. Just thinking. What were you saying?”

“Only that I will call your grandmother and let her know what happened to you.”

“Thanks. And you’ll let her know I need to stop by the store first?”

“Why do you need to go to the store?”

“Uh…”

“Never mind. I better go. My break is almost up.”

“Okay. Thanks for calling Grandma.”

“You’re welcome. Drive safe.”

I got lucky and found a parking spot near the front doors. I gave myself a time limit of ten minutes to do my shopping and get back to the car.

But I should have guessed I’d get distracted. I beelined for the undergarments section, found cheap but comfortable underwear, and intended to go to the registers. But I saw a cute shirt that stopped me in my tracks. And then another. After telling myself no, I made my way to the front of the store only to remember that I needed a couple things for my place. Since I was there, I might as well buy them.

By the time I purchased my underwear and other things, went to the restroom to put them on, and left the store, it looked like it was a different day. The sky was so dark it looked like it was dusk out despite it being the middle of the day.

The smell of rain was in the air, and I remembered how Wulf had told me that it was going to rain later. I couldn’t believe he’d been right.

Halfway to my grandma’s house, it started pouring outside and the wind had picked up. The visibility was so bad that I couldn’t see the road signs. I had to pull off to the side of the road and put my grandmother’s new address into my phone’s GPS. Thankfully, the rest of my trip was in town. I couldn’t imagine going 60 MPH in the storm.

I pulled in front of what I presumed to be my grandma’s new house. She had moved into a development where she didn’t have to do any yardwork or shoveling in the winter, but all the homes were built the same. They were all painted the same color, too.

I pulled up to the curb and ran for her front door.
